Tinted lipstick is the perfect antidote to the gloomy January blues that are catching on. While not a trend – red lipstick is to beauty what a black dress is to fashion; a classic choice with enduring appeal – it embodies a mood of the moment and is an empowering piece for those who wish to attract more joy accessories.
With the 2023 awards season in full swing, many of us are inspired by the details of dressing for award shows and movie premieres – and this month, several top stars have already elevated their red carpet looks with red lipstick.
Margot Robbie set the tone, wearing a Valentino columnar red gown to the Babylon premiere in London, with makeup to match perfectly. Her beauty look, designed by artist Pati Dubroff, included two red lipsticks, one from Beauty Pie and the other from Chanel. the matching theme continued at the Critics’ Choice Awards, where fellow Hollywood actress Julia Garner paired her eye-catching red lipstick with her outfit, a Ferragamo ( Ferragamo’s sheer dress.
So did Monica Barbaro of Golden Globes Dolce & Gabbana (pictured above). Her makeup artist Katey Denno wrote on Instagram, “We talked about using a nude/light pink lipstick, a deep black almost gothic purple/red lipstick, and in the end, choosing which color/mix of bold red tones would be appropriate if we went that route. Any of them can work and be beautiful, but once we glided on this shade, I knew it was the right choice for the day, the dress, the mood.” The lipstick itself is KW Red by sustainable brand Kjaer Weis, a fearless true red that starts as a liquid and dries to a velvety matte finish.
Elsewhere on the red carpet this month, red lipstick was used to contrast with the color of the outfit. Take Amanda Seyfried’s Critics’ Choice look, for example: she wore a shimmery red that exuded the same energy as her bold Dior metallic gown.
